I am pleased to be a 2020 recipient of the Connecticut Artists Respond Grant. With the funding, I will work alongside my father as we both create landscape paintings in my parents’ backyard, and share our process with a virtual audience through a short film that will be available here prior to October 2020.

As we paint, we will ask ourselves the question: can simple viewpoints spark imagination and drive to create? Between my experience as a trained artist, and my father’s unique life perspective having lived through the Great Depression as well as through combat military service, we believe that our presentation of the benefits of painting on the mind and spirit will be relevant at this unprecedented time, when so many are struggling, isolated at home, and seeking outlets for comfort and joy.

Along with students, hobbyists, and professionals of any age, we believe the content may be appropriate for older individuals closer to my father’s age, as well as veterans who might feel a connection because of shared military service. We will share the video with a nearby senior center in Hartford and contacts at the Veterans Affairs. If these groups or individuals want to try their hand at painting, Jerry’s Artarama of CT has agreed to support our proposal by preparing bundled materials for curbside pick-up, to make it safe and easy for people to purchase the basics they’d need to make a painting in their own backyard.
